Golden Spike Trail, Moab
Trail
The easy parts are layered broken rock and dirt, while the challenges are solid rock ledges. There is some slickrock, but it is those short, vertical sections that favor tall tires and locking differentials.
After passing the 4-rated Poison Spider Mesa obstacles there is some easy slickrock fin driving with one very steep uphill (the Launching Pad) and one steep downhill. There are tight turns in a canyon bottom and one short slickrock ledge, followed by a long stretch of ups and downs over broken rock, with a few sharp steps. The Golden Crack marks the beginning of the final nasty mile to Gold Bar Rim. Highlights are the Golden Steps, Golden Ramp, Double Whammy, and the Body Snatcher. Bring only the best of equipment; the tow truck can't make it.

one of the best
This trail is one of my favorites!
Location: 5 miles from Moab with good trailer parking--both trail heads
Difficulty: very challenging, but nothing like going up Pritchet Canyon
Scenery: 360 degrees along the entire route--especially the view from the rim
Amenities/Accomadations: Moab is just down the road
This can be a very long in and out trail, or a long 1 way with a trailer parked at the other end (on US 191, just south of junction with UT 313). For those on street legal toys, a very enjoyable round trip can be made by linking Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim, Gemini Bridges county road, UT 313, Long Canyon county road and UT 279 back to trailhead.
I've done this trail many times in my Bronco, on ATV's, and motorcycles and never get tired of it.
If you're looking for a good challenge with a veiw, you'll have a great time.
More action...
Ah...more action after connecting from Poison Spider. This section is covered in challenging
step-ups and step-downs. If you're not sporting a skid plate, use caution!
Keep a very close eye on the Golden Spikes, they're difficult to see in the heat of the mid-day
sun and it's easy to lose your way!
